Finnish president Sauli Niinistö ratified new legislation today, making it possible for authorities to imprison aliens who are caught violating their travel bans to the country. This according to a press release from the Ministry of Justice. Previously, violators have only been fined, but starting January next year they will face up to one year in prison.
According to the Ministry of Justice, jail sentences will be in better accordance to the severity of the crime. At the same time, the harsher penalties are expected to deter aliens from breaching the border.
